Performance Reviews: Don't Wait!
The end of the calendar year is a great time for employers to reflect on how their business has done with performance reviews over the past 12 months. Although workers can be given valuable feedback anytime, a formal performance review should be done at least annually and is often associated with the anniversary of an employee's hire date. If you've fallen behind, make it a priority in the New Year to get caught up!
Documenting employee performance is essential because it provides a clear record of an employee's strengths, weaknesses, and overall contributions, allowing employers to make informed decisions about promotions, salary adjustments, training needs, and disciplinary actions. Performance reviews act as a foundation for effective employee development and organizational success.
A few tips for conducting performance reviews:
- Communicate about praiseworthy accomplishments and areas needing improvement.
- Remain objective and fair, giving the employee a chance to share their perspective.
- Be specific, giving clear examples of how expectations have (or have not) been met.
- Set goals that are measurable and achievable.
- Make a plan to follow up.
