Holidays

With the 4th of July coming up this weekend, holidays and summer breaks are on everyone’s minds. Here are a couple of legal rules for business owners to keep in mind:

First, holidays are great for employees, giving them time to decompress from the stresses of work and increasing the morale of the workplace. If you don’t already have a "Holiday Policy" in place, now is the perfect time to get started!

Second, there are no laws that require certain holidays. Rather, business owners get to choose which holidays (if any) they want to provide to their workers.

Third, holidays can be "paid" or "unpaid" - it’s up to you as the business owner! If you have a "paid" holiday policy, the extra pay does not count as "hours of work" for determining weekly overtime hours unless the employee is actually working on the holiday.

Lastly, some employees may wish to observe, as periods of worship or commemoration, certain religious days that are not included in your company’s holiday schedule. Employees may use accrued vacation or personal time for this purpose. Otherwise, the time off is generally unpaid.

Ultimately, business owners have a lot of freedom in deciding how holidays will be celebrated at your company, but please reach out if you have any specific questions about holidays!
